Previously we have reported the synthesis of lantern complexes with thiobenzoate ligands (Chem. Sci., 2012, 3, 602) containing the heterobimetallic pairs Pt-M with M = Fe, Co, and Ni.  We have now extended this synthetic methodology to thioacetate systems and complexes with M = Mg, Ca, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn.  The initial complexes of the form [PtM(tba)4(OH2)] all contain one equivalent of water bound to the 3d metal.  In the newer [PtM(SAc)4] systems, materials with no such axial ligand have been prepared as well as with a variety of other ligands L in the complexes [PtM(SAc)4(L)].   Compounds that exhibit antiferromagnetic coupling between two [PtM(SAc)4(L)] units via a Pt�Pt metallophilic interaction have been characterized with single crystal X-ray diffraction and VT magnetic susceptibility.   The factors that determine whether or not  the Pt�Pt interactions form will be discussed as well as a comparison between the thiobenzoate and thioacetate families of compounds.
