The successful synthesis of stable, microporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has succeeded primarily with rigid bidentate and tridentate ligands.  To develop the next generation of multi-functional MOFs, we are developing semi-rigid ligands that have two points of rotation between the ditopic binding to the rigid metal-ligand fragment.  The built-in points of rotation or �hinges� within the ligand have led to the rational synthesis of a breathing MOF.  For the first time, the �kneecap� in this breathing MOF lies within the ligand itself and not at the metal-ligand juncture.  Furthermore, a series of 2-D MOFs show how the concept of iso-reticular design can be employed with these semi-rigid ligands.  The double hinge allows for exact control of the pore size in one dimension as a function of the semi-rigid linker.
