Pyrite nanoparticles have recently been discovered at hydrothermal vent black smokers at EPR and Lau Basin. These nanoparticles may represent an important pathway for iron transport from hydrothermal vents to the larger ocean. Here we discuss oxidation kinetics and formation pathways of laboratory synthesized nanoparticulate and micron sized pyrite, in order to better understand how nanoparticulate pyrite may form and behave in natural hydrothermal systems and as they emanate to oceanic bottom waters. Pyrite formation by both the polysulfide and the H2S pathway is discussed, along with the oxidation kinetics of these particles in oxygenated seawater. Discussion will include reaction precursors, the effect of surfactants and synthesis time on resulting morphology, as well as the oxidation products and their potential fate in the world ocean. Laboratory experiments are coupled with field data collected at several different hydrothermal vents, and the potential magnitude of this impact will be discussed.
