3D hybrid Co3O4 nanoarchitectures have been synthesized sucessfully from 1D nanorods and 2D nanodisks, respectively. Based on the effect of reaction time and temperature on the morphology of the materials, a multi-step splitting growth mechanism is proposed to understand the formation of the 3D nanoarchitectures. A series of porous Co3O4 nanostructures, such as 1D nanorods, 2D nanodisks, 3D twin-spheres with urchin-like structures, and 3D hybrid materials constructed with nanowalls, will be presented. The 3D nanoarchitectures exhibit enhanced performances in energy storage, when used as building blocks to fabricate supercapacitors. The improved working stabilities and high specific capacitances of the devices could be attributed to the unique 3D nanostructures of the materials.
