In 2008 Bocarsly reported a stunning result: pyridinium cation acts as an extremely efficient catalyst for the direct reduction of CO2 to methanol. In order to explore the mechanism of this process we are exploring structural and electronic factors that influence the rate of the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. In this poster, we will describe results for three classes of compounds: naphthyridines to probe steric effects, and dialkylamino and alkoxy substituted pyridines to explore the electronic effects of increased electron density on the pyridyl nitrogen.
