Higher energy density electrochemical capacitors are needed for applications including military platforms, consumer electronics, and hybrid and electric vehicles. This paper describes the use of low-cost high surface-area early transition-metal carbides and nitrides as electroactive materials for supercapacitor applications. We observed that pretreatment of the surface significantly improved the capacitances and electrochemical stabilities of these materials in aqueous electrolytes. In this paper we present results from several characterization techniques including cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to elucidate changes in surface chemistry caused by pretreatment.
