The thermal upgrading of a Venezuelan vacuum residue (VR) with an industrial hydrogen donor was investigated. The liquid products were analyzed by simulated distillation and their stabilities were characterized by spot method. The conventional thermal upgrading of VR was used as a reference. The comparison of these two processes showd that the presence of the hydrogen donor decreased the conversion of VR, reduced the yields of gas and distillates and improved the stabilities of liquid products for the same reaction time . However, at the same rating of spot (or at the same severity), the presence of the hydrogen donor achieved about 4-8 wt% more conversion of VR.
