Anion exchange (AEX) is a common process for the removal of organic carbon from natural waters in drinking water treatment. In anion exchange, organic matter attaches to charged sites within the AEX resin structure. A benefit of AEX use for organic matter removal is AEX's ability to be regenerated. Different regeneration agents and concentrations can impact how effectively AEX resins are regenerated. The goal of this work was to investigate how the use of two different regeneration agents, bicarbonate and chloride, at two different concentrations impacted the performance of AEX. This work used HPSEC to determine how different organic matter molecular weight fractions impact the fouling of resins. By comparing the performance of resin after regeneration and investigating which organic matter fractions are preferentially removed and which fractions remain on the resin it is possible to create relationships to which fractions of organic matter are prone to foul resins.
