Silver vanadium oxide(Ag2V4O11) has been a highly successful cathode material in batteries used for implantable cardiac defibrillators(ICDs).  ICDs require years of microampere current delivery along with intermittent high current pulses in the ampere range.  Our goal was to rationally develop a new family of materials which incorporate the best properties of two different successful battery materials, LiFePO4 and Ag2V4O11. The desire to obtain the high chemical stability observed in phosphates, while providing high operating voltage, high capacity, clear end-of-service indication, and the in-situ generation of a conductive matrix upon electrochemical reduction led to our deliberate selection of silver vanadium phosphorous oxides(SVPO) for exploration as new cathodes for lithium based batteries.  We report the study of several alternate compositions of SVPO.  The composition impacts the voltage profile and the discharge process.  Changes as a function of electrochemical reduction will be detailed, including formation of metallic silver nanoparticles and nanowires during discharge.
