A series of dipolar self-assembled monolayer (SAM) precursors were synthesized and deposited on the tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) anodes of bulk-heterojunction organic photovoltaics (OPV) cells. The modified electrodes were characterized physically, chemically, and electronically. The film thickness, rms type roughness, and polarity were measured by XRR, XPS, and contact angle measurements. The film on ITO was determined to be hydrophobic and smooth. The work function and charge transport rate constants were measured by UPS and cyclic voltammetry, respectively. The modified anodes were used to fabricate conventional bulk-heterojunction OPVs with two different types of active layers: poly(3-hexylthiophene):phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PC71BM) and Poly[[4,8-bis[(2-ethylhexyl)oxy]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl][3-fluoro-2-[(2-ethylhexyl)carbonyl]thi-eno[3,4-b]thio-phenediyl]] (PTB7):PC71BM. The device performance characteristics were determined to be dependent on the charge transport rate constant, Ks, rather than work function of the anode. Also, the dependence is larger for PTB7:PC71BM based OPV, presumably for its higher number of charge carriers.
