Active materials for energy storage based on environmentally friendly and earth abundant metal centers are desired for the development of future battery technologies.  Preparation and utilization of materials based on iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) centers will be described.  The impact of nanoscopic dimensional control on the electrochemistry of the materials will be discussed.
