CO2 emissions resulting from combustion of fossil fuel is a major anthropogenic factor for global warming. A current commercial CO2 capture approach using aqueous amine scrubbing requires high energy consumption for regeneration which leads to significantly decreased efficiency. Novel robust sorbent materials and technologies for economical CO2 capture have attracted increasing attention from both academia and industry. Herein, three 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium amino acid salts ([EMIM][AA])-type amino acid ionic liquids (AAILs) were synthesized and immobilized into porous polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres for CO2 removal. The AAILs exhibited good thermal stability up to 200�C and could be facilely immobilized into PMMA microparticles. More significantly, the sorbents retained the highly porous structures after AAIL loading, exhibited fast kinetics as well as good sorption capacity, and can be regenerated and reused. The presented pathway may pave the way for developing AAIL functionalized sorbents with high capacity and fast CO2transport kinetics.
