The efficient conversion of solar energy into stored chemical potential requires the design of dyes capable of absorbing light in the visible and near-IR regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The synthesis of coordination complexes containing two different redox-active ligands afforded dyes with low-energy absorption bands corresponding to ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer transitions and a charge-separated excited state. The frontier electronic structure of the dye complexes can be tuned through the choice of redox-active ligand, resulting in charge-transfer absorptions that range from 600 nm (2 eV) out to 1200 nm (1 eV). Synthetic, spectroscopic, electrochemical and computational studies will be presented.
