Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) represent a molecular approach to nanoscale magnetic materials. An SMM is a mesoscopic magnetic particle, and derives its properties from a large ground-state spin (S) value and an Ising (easy-axis) type of magnetoanisotropy; SMMs exhibit classical and quantum properties, with potential applications in quantum computing and molecular spintronics. SMMs are molecular complexes, and therefore are zero-dimensional. What happens if SMMs are connected into polymeric 1D chains, 2D grids, or 3D networks has been a question that has been recently under intense investigation. We have attempted the linking of SMMs, and the synthesis and characterization of some of our results will be discussed, together with sensing results from SMMs acting as analyte-recognition compounds in photo-electric chemical sensors.
