Aiming at metal-based molecular electronics, efforts toward synthesizing salen-type metallosurfactants led to the design of a new series of copper(II) and nickel(II) complexes. The ligand consists of a hydrophobic head group that coordinates with the metal ion and two hydrophilic alkyl chains. The ligand and metal complexes have been characterized using NMR, ESI-mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, infrared, and UV-visible spectroscopic methods. The electrochemical properties of the complexes were assessed using cyclic voltammetry. Isothermal compression was used to assess the amphiphilic properties of the metal complexes, and the collapse pressures for the nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes reached ~30 mN/m. Langmuir Blodgett films deposited solid substrates were characterized using UV-visible and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS). The stretching vibrations of C=N groups were observed ~1600 cm-1. Surface characterization of the film deposited solid substrate was assessed using atomic force microscopy. The use of redox active monolayer for device fabrication is under investigation.
