While the bulk properties of ZIFs are well-studied and demonstrate the promise of such materials in applications for energy storage and generation, less is known about the outermost surfaces of ZIFs. We present a study of the surface of ZIF-8 by preparing thin films for investigation with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In addition, we have applied temperature programmed reaction spectroscopy to study the interaction of energetically relevant gases with these films. These results demonstrate more generally that surface characterization techniques can be used to probe the surface properties of ZIFs and provide insight into desorption processes.
