The development of efficient strategies for the defunctionalization of bio-derived substrates is a key challenge in the use of biomass as an alternative energy source. Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) strategies represent a promising class of reactions; we recently reported a Pd-catalyzed HDO reaction that converts glucose-derived substrates to n-alkane products in a one-pot synthesis.  Despite its synthetic utility, this reaction operates under extremely harsh conditions. This contribution describes our efforts to optimize the reaction conditions via systematic mechanistic studies.
