Electrocatalytic water oxidation is a critical process in photoelectrochemical solar energy conversion into chemical fuels. State-of-the-art metal-oxide catalysts for this reaction (IrOx, RuOx, CoPi, NiOx etc.) suffer from either high cost or low activity, but improved activity can be achieved with mixed metal oxides composed entirely of earth-abundant elements. This presentation will describe the discovery, preparation and characterization a well-defined ternary inverse-spinel oxide electrocatalyst composed of Ni-Fe-Al in a 1:1:1 ratio (NiFeAlO4). NiFeAlO4 exhibits significantly improved electrocatalytic water-oxidation activity relative to Ni oxide and other Ni-Fe oxide electrocatalysts.
