Highly selective processes are coveted throughout chemistry.  For example, synthetic chemists have invested significant effort in developing chemo-, regio-, and stereoselective reactions and increasing attention is being paid to pairs of chemoselective reactions that are orthogonal.  Supramolecular chemists are analogously beginning to develop selective and orthogonal processes, and these will be vital for creating the next generation of functional and advanced nanomaterials.  This talk will briefly review the history of orthogonality in supramolecular chemistry and illustrate its application to materials and medicine with recent examples from our research group.
