The structural elucidation of pyrogenic (fire-derived) organic matter (PyOM) produced from dual-enriched (13C/15N) Pondersoa pine (Pinus ponderosa), Jack pine (Pinus banksiana) and Red maple (Acer rubrum) wood at temperatures ranging from 200 to 600 �C offers novel insights into the mechanisms by which C and N from pyrolyzed biomaterials produced under typical fire conditions in temperate forests could be stabilized in soils. High-field multinuclear solid-state NMR (ssNMR) with fast magic-angle spinning (MAS) provides a unique tool to probe the key molecular moieties of amorphous pine and maple PyOM materials. Together with mid-infrared spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), 13C, 15N, and 1H ssNMR revealed the formation of a free radical-containing disordered blend of nitrogenous aromatics and heat resistant aliphatics in the PyOM due to incomplete combustion of the precursor wood and the supramolecular organization of the heterogeneous pyrolyzed materials.
