NOx emissions can cause significant environmental and health concerns.  More specifically, they contribute to the formation of acid rain, atmospheric particles, and various other toxic substances resulting in health problems, visibility reduction, eutrification and global warming. In this exploratory project we propose an innovative approach of utilizing a waste concrete material which, based on our preliminary studies, can offer a new way of removing NO2 in a cheap and sustainable way. This can be potentially a viable way to offset emissions from in incineration plants, boilers, process heaters, glass furnaces and power plants. It can also offer an important insight into atmospheric chemistry of urban environment. In this study we tested. NO2 removal capacity of fresh and recycled concrete using fixed bed reactor under varying operating conditions. We also used in-situ spectroscopic techniques, surface area measurements and microscopy to develop a mechanistic understanding of the removal process. Our results indicate that this approach can be potentially a new way forward to mitigate environmental emissions of this priority pollutant.
