Several years ago we synthesized a cubic Cu8 cluster with 12 sulfur atoms surrounding the metal atoms.  The center of the cube was empty. Years later we found that sulfur and halides could be centered in a related cube.  It is likely that oxygen also bonds symmetrically with all eight Cu(I) atoms, a result of some importance in some motor oils. With Zn(II) dithiophosphates,  a major constituent  of these oils, the coordination of zinc about the sulfur or oxygen is tetrahedral.  While I initially surmised that hydride might also sit in center of the copper(I) cube,  this proved not to be correct by Liu and co-workers. The coordination of hydride to Cu(I) becomes tetrahedral. With carbon coordination to Au(I), the number of atoms bonded to carbon is known to be four, five or six.  Werner chemistry with Cu(I) or Au(I) complexes as ligands gives many interesting possibilities, and some of them will be described.
