Chemists are acutely aware of the hazards they encounter while working in the laboratory and take preventive measures to protect themselves. For women chemists who are pregnant or have young children, laboratory research and instruction pose significant challenges. While universities have made advances on maternity leave and accommodations for new parents, this has not addressed the unique position of women chemists. A qualitative feminist study guided by constructivist grounded theory was conducted with women faculty members at primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs) and at research-intensive universities. These women shared their experiences as instructors and research advisors and the challenges pregnancy and early motherhood posed for their careers. Many chemicals pose significant risks to developing fetuses and infants, which can have substantial impacts on a woman's career when she chooses to avoid contact with them. Women at PUIs faced different challenges than women at research-intensive universities because they were more often in the laboratory, as instructors and undergraduate research advisors, whereas women at research-intensive universities were less often required to be in the laboratory. While the women in this study reported many challenges related to motherhood, they also identified key supports that fostered a positive experience for them and some advantages to working in the university setting. Overall, recommendations for improving the experience of women chemists who are pregnant and new mothers are offered, both from the participants themselves and from the results of this study.
