Sn and its alloys exhibit promising energy storage capacity, with theoretical specific capacity of 959 mAh/g, and high electrical conductivity, for next generation lithium-ion batteries.  In this paper, we describe the the mechanism of Sn lithiation/delithiation on thin Sn films (30 to 200 nm) through an alloying/dealloying process, and the potential dependent SEI film formation examined using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and neutron depth profiling techniques.
