A bi-functional catalyst composed of metallic nickel and molybdenum carbide has been fabricated for CO2 reforming of CH41. The different catalytic behaviors of Ni-Mo2C catalysts with different Ni/Mo ratios allowed us to discriminate the catalytic roles of Ni and carbide for DRM2. It was found that Ni-Mo2C was a typical bi-functional catalyst, the dissociation of CH4 is catalyzed by Ni, while the activation of CO2 takes place on Mo2C. By regulating the molar ratio of Ni and Mo2C, a catalytic oxidation-recarburization cycle could be established. Benefiting from this redox cycle, the Ni-Mo2C catalysts is supervisor to the traditional metal carbide catalysts as verified by its stable activity at atmospheric pressure. It was found that Ni-Mo2C could be in-situ synthesized through carbonization of NiMoOx in reforming gas of CH4/CO2 (1:1)3. Ni facilitates CH4 dissociation to generate active carbon and hydrogen species for carburization of NiMoOx. This means that there is no necessary to fabricate Ni-Mo2C catalyst in CH4-H2 firstly, instead of that, NiMoOx precursor could be in-situ carburized into active phases of Ni-Mo2C in CH4/CO2(1:1), which is demonstrated to be active for DRM.
