Ion transporters facilitate the transport of charged ions across the cellular membranes. Misregulation of ions can lead to diseases such as Cystic fibrosis and Bartter syndrome. Natural products such as ceramides, prodigiosin and valinomycin can act as ionophores.  In particular, ion channels in nature make use of amino acid residues to selectively bind and transport ions. In this study, derivatives of natural products such as amino acids, prodigiosin1 and monoglycerols2 are being utilized for their ion transport properties. These synthetic derivatives of natural products combine both �molecular recognition� and �membrane soluble� features that are utilized for the development of transmembrane ion carriers. Progress in this area of using various natural products, such as amino acids, glycerols and prodigiosins as transmembrane transporters of ions and small molecules will be discussed.References:1.
