Chlamydia trachomatis infections present a significant health problem that affects more than 1.2 million people in the United States. There is a strong need for rapid diagnostic methods, but current tests are either expensive or time-consuming. We are interested in developing a Chlamydia detection system based on its affinity for heparin-like structures presented on the surface of host cells. Our synthetic approach consists in the use of orthogonal groups with our donor/acceptor to obtain an orthogonally protected disaccharide. With this orthogonal approach we can obtain our desired sulfated molecule (sulfoform) from the same starting material. The sulfoforms are conjugated to a bifunctional linker having a terminal azide, which will be use to couple to a scaffold to create a dendrimeric compound. This scaffold will then be conjugated to a NHS active glass slide for screening. Screening studies are currently underway.
