Drug development towards curing AIDS has been the leading edge of drug discovery ever since HIV was first reported as the cause of AIDS. Tremendous effort has been devoted to designing HIV-1 protease inhibitors. For further prevention of HIV infection, there is a great need of an effective HIV vaccine. To probe the utility of bringing together an HIV-associated peptide antigen and an HIV-associated carbohydrate in a single platform to boost its immunogenicity, we have designed and synthesized thiol-terminated oligosaccharides for attachment to gold nanoparticles. The synthesized saccharides include partial structures of high-mannose type glycan present on HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein.
