Human milk oligosaccharides (HMO) play important roles in infant nutrition and help protect the infant from intestinal disorders and diseases.  However, studies of the biological effects of specific carbohydrates for their possible incorporation into infant formula have been hindered by the lack of access to structurally well-defined components in larger than milligram quantities. Herein we report efforts to develop efficient routes for the gram-scale production of a variety of milk-sugar-associated carbohydrate building blocks with protecting group patterns amenable to incorporation of these monomers into automated solution-phase library synthesis protocols.
