The Open Chemistry Collaborative in Diversity Equity (OXIDE) works together with the chairs and thought-agents in the leading research-active chemistry departments to advance diversity systemically and sustainably. Through discussion with social scientists and evaluation of our discipline's practices, we are working to identify effective practices that can be implemented within the chemical academy to advance diversity equity. Within this effort, diversity is interpreted broadly; it includes gender, race-ethnicity, disabilities and sexual orientation. We will report on the outcomes of the biennial National Diversity Equity Workshop (NDEW) held in April 2013. NDEW focus session topics included (1) Organizational structure, behavior and dynamics; (2) Recruiting, hiring, retention and promotion; (3) Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and questioning (LGBTQIQ) equity; and (4) Creating an inclusive culture. It is notable that NDEW 2013 is the first of the chemistry-directed diversity equity workshops to include a specific focus on LGBTQIQ equity. We will also report faculty rank, gender, and race-ethnicity demographics from our most recent survey of over 75 research-active chemistry departments.
