Wild-type cutinase from Fusarium solani and its fusion with the carbohydrate-binding module  (CBM) N1 from Cellulomonas fimi have been expressed in E. coli. The CBM has shown an increased biocatalytic effect at the surface of cellulosic substrates. Enhanced hydrolysis has been found at the surface of acetate and triacetate fibres, as well better levels of esterification of transesterification of octanoic acid and vegetable oil towards cellulose.  Detailed mechanisms are shown for the action of cutinases and fused proteins in this and other model substrates. An overview is given on the wide range of applications of the products obtained.
