The pedagogical benefits of research have driven many undergraduate institutions to provide such experiences for their students. Of these institutions, community colleges face several unique barriers that impede such endeavors: (1) Non-traditional students have obligations that preclude involvement in extracurricular lab work, (2) Faculty loading does not account for time spent on research, and (3) New equipment and consumables are limited by available resources.Described herein is the development of an undergraduate research program that has been embedded within a chemical technology curriculum. Students are engaged in research as early as their first year and contribute to the project throughout several of their courses. The benefits of this model will be discussed with respect to student attitudes, learning objectives, and project design.
