Low energy electron�induced chemical processes are of interest largely because of the discovery that they can damage biological molecules such as DNA. In addition, other applications related to radiation chemistry, astrochemistry, and material science have gained interest in particular because high energy impact produces secondary low�energy electrons that can then induce chemical reactions or degradation of molecules. A new and recently optimized experimental vacuum chamber has been designed and built at the Notre Dame Radiation Laboratory. Using this new system, crossed molecular beam/low�energy electron experiments can observe anions, cations, and radical species using quadrupole mass spectrometric (QMS) detection. The underlying dissociative electron attachment (DEA) mechanisms can be observed. The experimental set�up and first results of these studies will be presented. The first gas�phase systems of interest include further understanding the fragmentation pathways of triflates, which have lithographic applications, and biomolecules relevant to radiation chemistry.
