AbstractThe halogen bond has attracted an increasing amount of attention in the chemical literature due to an increased realization that this kind of interaction is important in many areas spanning biochemistry and crystal engineering. In a previous contribution, our research group demonstrated the potentially significant role of this kind of bonding in inorganic chemistry and materials science. In our contribution, we assess the nature of halogen bonding interactions of the form (R�X---Base)where R is an -MH3 where M = C, Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb in conjunction with a range of Lewis bases. We find that the interactions show a significant sensitivity to the nature of M and confirm an exceptional characteristic in the length and strength of the halogen bonds (unusually longer and weaker bond) when M = Si. We outlining an explanation for this observation, and other significant aspects of our work on these interactions in inorganic systems.
