In order to enhance processability of difficult to dissolve compounds, such as polymide, a novel hydropertriazine-based polymer precursor was developed. By using high yield hydropertriazine formation, a novel polymer also containing phenol and amic acid, was formulated. The polymer can be easily dissolved in common solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran, for ease of processing. By heating the prepolymer up to 100 oC, the phenol groups react with hydropertriazine to form benzoxazine groups. Further heating up to 220 oC will cause the amic acid to react and form aromatic imide groups with water evaporation. During the imide group formation, benzoxazine groups also undergo ring opening polymerization. The result is a crosslinked sample with strong mechanical properties and thermal stability. The primary benefit of this novel approach is the ease of solvent processing for a chemical group that is known to be difficult to dissolve and hard to process.
