A novel and physiologically compatible strategy was used for synthesis of pH-sensitive and Glutathione-sensitive sodium alginate hydrogels. A latent cross-linking agent is incorporated into the soluble polymer by immobilization of a hydrophobic thiol-bearing ligand, namely 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP), to the backbone of SA. Cross-linking can be induced simply by exposure to air. The obtained results demonstrated that the hydrogels had good pH- and glutathione -sensitivity. The method shows a potential for the application of gels in drug delivery.
