Spin crossover takes place in transition metal complexes that contain 3d ions with a d4-7 electron configuration.  Within this category of complexes, Fe(II) mononuclear complexes have been extensively studied over several decades.  By comparison, the number of polynuclear Fe(II) complexes that have been studied is low and the studies of such complexes are recent.  We report here a detailed study of tetranuclear homo- and hetero-metallic complexes that contain Fe(II).   In the former complexes the Fe(II) ions have either [Fe(N-N)(NC)2] or [Fe(N-N)(CN)2] coordination (N-N is a bidentate ligand that coordinates to Fe through two imine Ns).  The different coordination modes of CN- cause differences in the strength of the ligand field of the two types of Fe large enough to cause their magnetic properties to be distinct.   This presentation will outline how spectroscopic and structural studies lead to the identification of the properties of specific Fe ions within the clusters.
