We report light-induced modification of magnetic behavior for two series of compounds. Spin-crossover complexes [Fe(tpma)(xbim)]X2 (tpma = tris(2-pyridyl)methylamine; xbim = 1,1'-(a,a'-o-xylyl)-2,2'-biimidazole) undergo a transition from the high-spin (S = 2) state to the low-spin (S = 0) state upon lowering the temperature. Similar to other spin-crossover complexes, the nature of the counter ion (X� = Cl�, I�, BF4�, ClO4�, PF6�, and BPh4�) has a strong effect on the transition temperature. We also demonstrate that the light-induced excited spin state trapping (LIESST) effect is strongly anion-dependent, which can be explained by substantial changes in the crystal packingfor different anions. Light-induced bond redistribution in organic hypervalent dimers also leads to magnetic state, with strong antiferromagnetic coupling between photogenerated radicals. This state exhibits unusually high thermal stability which is explained by peculiarities of the crystal structure in the photoinduced state.
