Efficient synthesis of biaryls is of significant interest due to the ubiquity of such structures in pharmaceuticals and commodity chemicals. Recent attention in this field has focused on the oxidative coupling of two arene C�H bonds that avoids the need for the use of pre-functionalized substrates, such as aryl halides. We recently reported a method for aerobic oxidative homocoupling of o-xylene that employs a homogeneous PdX2/2-fluoropyridine (X = acetate, trifluoroacetate) catalyst system. In an effort to facilitate the development of improved catalyst systems, we have undertaken a mechanistic study of this reaction. The results of this study will be described in this presentation.
