III-V compound semiconductor devices have exhibited the highest conversion efficiencies when configured as solar cells or photocathodes.  Yet, their high processing costs arising from the constraints of epitaxial growth processes, including expensive precursors and substrates, has limited their utility for large-scale integration.  In this regard, new growth techniques that result in low-cost processing without depreciation of materials quality and device efficiency are of high interest.  Here, I will present new synthesis platforms for III-V nanostructures and thin films on cost-effective metal foils with material/device quality and performance comparable to those obtained by epitaxial growth.  The work is expected to have important implications for future solar cells and photoelectrochemical devices.
