The synthesis of magnetic colloids containingstable iron oxide nanoparticles was successfully demonstrated through using atraditional plastic additive - maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) asan alternative to commonly used small molecular weight surfactants. To bespecific, an one-pot bottom up wet chemistry method was used to synthesizethese colloids from thermal decomposing soluble organometallic precursor,Fe(CO)5 in refluxing MAPP / xylene organic solution. Differentparticle structure, self assembly morphology and thus resulted physicochemicalproperty can be manipulated through simply changing the MAPP to metal precursorweight ratio in the organic solution. In addition, by using the fixed MAPP tometal precursor weight ratio, the MAPP with different backbone chain lengthshave been demonstrated to be capable to control the self assembly morphologiesand the physicochemical property of the synthesized magnetic colloids withoutany external magnetic field. The formation mechanisms of these differentcolloids will also be covered through systematic studies by means oftransmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), m�ssbauer spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and roomtemperature magnetic property measurement.
