Fluorination has been one of the strategies that make n-type organic semiconductor materials possible. Fluorination successfully transforms organic semiconductor materials into high performance devices, for example, organic solar cells. However, a deep understanding on how fluorination affects the device performance by affecting the molecular packing in solid state is still needed in order to guide the rational design of high performance n-type organic semiconductor materials. Here, we present MP2 and DFT-D calculations of selected aromatic dimer systems, which represent typical non-covalent intermolecular interactions between arenes. Our computational results show that perfluoroalkylationdecreases intermolecular distances, encourages cofacial orientations, andincreases the interaction energy of the dimer molecules. These computational results are consistent with our crystal structures of perfluoroalkylated arenes. Detailed comparison between computational results and experimental data will be discussed.
