Oleaginous fungi that could accumulate considerable amount of lipid,such as Mortierella isabellina, is potential feedstock for advanced biofuel production. As to filamentous fungi, their specific productivities in submerged fermentation are often correlated with morphological form. In this study, distinct morphological developments from pellets of different size, free dispersed mycelium, to broken hyphae fragments were precisely controlled by the addition of magnesium silicate micro-particle. Different morphological forms led to different levels of lipid accumulation as well as different spatial patterns of lipid distribution in pellets . Lipid productivity was considerably enhanced in free dispersed mycelium form. Moreover, extracellular metabolite profiles showed that undesired by-product production was repressed in free dispersed mycelium form. Understanding the favored morphological form for lipid accumulation could provide insights into not only molecular mechanism of lipid biosynthesis linked with morphological development, but also design and optimization of bioprocess with oleaginous fungi to produce advanced biofuels.
