The chemistry of oxide surfaces plays a central role in many current technologies, and promises to play an ever-increasing role in future technologies.  In addition to their importance in catalytic and electrocatalytic materials, oxides are central ingredients in photocatalysts, transparent electrodes for photovoltaics, solid electrolytes and microelectronics.  When compared to metal surfaces, much less is understood about the chemistry of oxide surfaces.  Here we review what has been learned about the enthalpies and entropies of adsorption reactions on well-defined oxide surfaces from experimental measurements. In discussing well-defined oxide surfaces here, we refer to studies on ordered surfaces of bulk single crystal oxides and single-facet nanomaterials, and of ordered thin films of oxides that have been grown epitaxially on the surfaces of bulk single crystal metal surfaces.  Trends in adsorption energies and entropies on oxide surfaces will be reviewed.   Supported by: NSF CHE-1010287.
