Conductive polymer hydrogels (CPHs) represent a unique class of polymeric materials that synergize the advantageous features of hydrogels and organic conductors and have been used for a range of applications. The CPH nanostructures with 3D hierarchical architecture and multi-scale porosity, could facilitate the design of next-generation electrochemical devices and systems. In this presentation, our recent progress on rational synthesis and device studies of nanostructured CPHs for high-performance energy storage devices including supercapacitors and lithium-ion batteries will be discussed. First, the development of the CPHs-based high-performance supercapacitors with high capacitance, excellent rate capability and cycling stability will be presented. Second, unique integration of nanostructured CPHs with next-generation high-capacity electrode materials such as silicon (anode) to realize significantly higher energy storage capacity and long cycle life will be described.
