Limiting human exposure to carcinogenic compounds in the environment is an important element in the reduction of human cancers. Nitrosamines are a ubiquitous family of carcinogenic compounds that can be derived from agricultural, industrial and material manufacturing processes. Of particular interest are the aromatic nitrosamines, classically represented by the tobacco-specific nitrosamines, which have also exhibited potent carcinogenicity. Moreover, other aromatic nitrosamines, such as N-nitrosodiphenylamine, are now being detected in our drinking water resources and this has instigated further scrutiny of the entire aromatic nitrosamine family. We report here the reactions of the oxidizing hydroxyl and sulfate radicals with N-nitrosodiphenylamine and 8 model aromatic nitrosamine compounds. Absolute rate constants and transient radical spectra, from electron pulse radiolysis studies, as well final stable product identifications, from steady-state irradiations will be presented for the reaction of these two radicals with this series of carcinogenic nitrosamines.
