Triclosan is a widely used antimicrobial agent commonly found in everything from toothpaste to hand soaps. The large production volume of triclosan, and the nature of the applications of the chemical have both led to it being commonly identified as a pollutant in natural waters. Although triclosan has been shown to photodegrade rapidly, the resulting photoproducts include dioxins and PCBs. This study utilized ab initio theoretical methods, laser spectroscopic techniques, and batch photodegradation studies to determine the mechanism involved in this transformation.
