Recently, we have discovered a facile and scalable catalytic oxidation procedure to prepare large quantities of holey graphenes with controllable hole sizes in the range of ~5 to a few tens of nm. Holey graphenes are graphene sheets with a distribution of holes that penetrate through their thicknesses. Characterization of the products indicated that holey graphene largely retained the crystalline structure of the parent graphene sheets after the preparation process. This suggested that holey graphene sheets should have preserved many important properties of intact graphene sheets, including mechanical strength and thermal and electrical conductivity. The presence of holes on the graphitic surface provides these materials with advantages as reinforcement in composites and as electrodes in energy storage devices as compared to pristine graphene. Detailed experimental findings and application perspectives on these novel material platforms will be presented.
