Recent studies have shown that the already impressive properties of graphene can be enhanced through changes in its structure.  One increasingly interesting area is extending graphene's capabilities through chemical functionalization.  Incorporating organic functional groups into graphene opens a number of possibilities including attaching biomolecules, incorporating graphene into polymer composites, and enhancing the solubility of graphene sheets or graphene-coated particles.  We will discuss ongoing efforts to functionalize both CVD-grown graphene and reduced graphene oxide with amine groups, which in turn enable attachment of biomolecules for sensing applications.  We will also discuss the development of dense monolayer films covalently attached to fluorinated graphene, which enable the inclusion of a variety of functional groups.  Surface spectroscopic studies of the graphene modification will be discussed, as well as initial studies for potential applications.
