The ring-opening polymerization mechanism of benzoxazines is of strong interest to the polymer community. Polymerization via protonation on oxygen vs nitrogen potentially results in two different polymeric structures with differing properties. Our work has attempted to elucidate mechanistic details of the benzoxazine ring-opening polymerization by following the reaction of model benzoxazine compounds using NMR spectroscopy. In particular, oligomeric products were characterized and the reaction products were monitored as a function of benzoxazine conversion. Structures for the ring-opened products were elucidated and a modified mechanism for the ring-opening polymerization of benzoxazines has been proposed.
